The ZOO Antwerp from A to Z
Guided tour of some of the ZOO's highlights
The animals in a zoo are the ambassadors for their counterparts in the wilderness and for nature conservation. It is impossible to visit all our animals in an hour. But we will meet a couple of very important ambassadors. You will find out about their breeding programmes, our own scientific research and several interesting aspects about these animals. Flamingos, okapis, spectacled bears, macaws, lions: we are doing our utmost to save them from extinction, in the ZOO as well as in their own habitat.
Duration: 1 hour
ZOO Antwerp backstage
Behind the scenes at the ZOO
Between the ZOO and Central Station is a long service corridor which ordinary visitors never get to see. But now you get an opportunity to see it during ZOO Backstage. We start with the ZOO’s origins, about 170 years ago. Through the operating room and the quarantine room, we end up under the Aquarium and take a closer look at the pumps and filters, but also the sea horses and corals. Finally, we take a peek in the breeding room for tarantulas and cockroaches and end our visit with an encounter with a very friendly tame snake. Do you dare hold him?
Because of the many staircases and narrow passages, this guided tour is not suited for visitors with reduced mobility.
Duration: 1,5 hours
During the behind the scenes tour you will not see many animals because this tour focuses on more technical aspects. In other words: not suited for children under 12. That is why we can organise a tour in the Zoo itself at the same time, for children under 12. One adult required as supervisor of the group.
