Park Rules Antwerp ZOO

Dear visitor,

Welcome to our park! Our staff will ensure that you have a pleasant day and enjoy our animals and park to the full.

In everything the non-profit organization KMDA does, it wants to show respect for man, environment and society.

In order to guarantee your safety and that of our animals and to ensure that all visitors to the ZOO enjoy a pleasant outing, certain rules apply that have been set out below.

General

The Antwerp ZOO consists of a paying and a non-paying part.

The non-paying part of the ZOO is the entrance plaza, named the “Flamingo Square”. When you pass the entrance gates that form the border with the Astridsquare, you enter the entrance plaza, where Chapter 1 of these Park Rules apply.

Chapter 2 of these Park Rules apply to the paying part of the ZOO. The Park Rules are on display at the cash desk.

CHAPTER 1: Non-paying part of the ZOO: the entrance plaza

The rules mentioned hereafter are applicable in the entrance plaza of the ZOO, as from the moment you enter the entrance plaza:

  • Our animals are wild animals. Do not cross any fences, gates, enclosures, glass barriers, and/or physical boundaries.
  • You can not enter the paying part of the ZOO without a valid entrance ticket.
  • The entrance plaza is accessible for the public during the opening hours as indicated at the cash desk. The management reserves the right to close the gates of the entrance plaza for valid reasons, such as: alteration works, situations threatening the safety of visitors or animals, etc. Everyone shall leave the entrance plaza at first request of the personnel of KMDA.
  • Parents and supervisors of children and/or groups remain responsible for those under their custody for the whole duration of their presence on the entrance plaza. Children under 16 must be accompanied at all times by an adult.
  • The personnel of the ZOO have the right, at all times, to deny access to or to request to leave the entrance plaza to the following people:
    • Persons who are in possession of weapons, dangerous objects, alcohol, drugs, etc.;
    • Persons who in the past have already been found in possession of weapons, dangerous objects, alcohol drugs, etc. in one of our parks or in the vicinity thereof;
    • Persons whose behaviour arouses suspicion that they are engaged in drug trafficking;
    • Persons under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs;
    • Persons causing trouble or disturbing the peace;
    • Persons who have already caused trouble in the past;
    • Persons who refuse the submit to the present rules;
    • Persons who refuse to follow the instructions of the personnel of KMDA.
  • If such persons are already on the entrance plaza, they will be removed. The police will be called if necessary.
  • For the purpose of security, several cameras have been set up in the entrance plaza. The images will be used solely for the purposes provided in the CCTV Act of 21 March 2007.
  • It is prohibited to feed the animals. It is also prohibited to put hands, fingers, sticks or other objects through bars or fences, or to throw objects into the animal enclosures.
  • Pets are not allowed on the entrance plaza.
  • Roller skates, inline skates, and skateboards are not allowed on the entrance plaza. Bicycles and steps are allowed, but one can not ride his bicycle on the entrance plaza itself. Bicycles and steps should be installed in the bicycle shed on the entrance plaza, and should be removed before closing time on the sole responsibility of the visitors. The Zoo is not responsible in case of loss or theft. The Zoo has no depository obligation. The use of the bicycle shed is on the sole responsibility of the visitors. It is highly recommended to carefully lock all bicycles and steps in the bicycle shed. There is no surveillance in the bicycle shed. The use of this bicycle shed is on the sole responsibility of the visitors, the Zoo is not responsible in case of loss or theft.
  • Pushchairs and wheelchairs are allowed on the entrance plaza.
  • To avoid annoyance to visitors and animals, radios and other sound equipment are not allowed on the entrance plaza.
  • The Act of 1 June 2011 prohibiting the wearing of clothing that completely or largely hides the face is applicable on the entrance plaza and should be complied with.
  • It is prohibited to distribute or post up printed matter or to conduct opinion polls without the prior written consent of the management. It is also prohibited to hold meetings and/or deliver speeches, engage in propaganda, collect funds, advertise, distribute, exchange or sell items on the entrance plaza without the prior written consent of the management.
  • It is forbidden to make a fire or to smoke on the entrance plaza.
  • It is not allowed to eat or drink your own food or beverages on the entrance plaza. Always use the litter bins to dispose of waste.
  • KMDA is not responsible for damage or harm to visitors by third parties.

CHAPTER 2: Paying part of the ZOO

The rules mentioned hereinafter are applicable in the paying part of the ZOO:

General

  • Our animals are wild animals. Do not cross any fences, enclosures, moats, gates, glass barriers, greenery, etc. Keep to the paths that are open to the public. An exception to this rule is a guided tour behind the scenes accompanied by a member of staff or guide whose instructions you must carefully observe.
  • If you have a complaint to make about your visit, go to the reception desk where you may fill in and hand over a complaint form.
  • Antisocial behaviour towards other visitors will not be tolerated. Persons displaying such behaviour may be removed from the park without refund of costs.

Access to the paying part of the ZOO

  • You must be in possession of a valid entrance ticket during your entire visit to the paying part of the ZOO. A staff member may ask you to show this ticket at any time. This entrance ticket is only valid during the opening hours of the park as indicated at the main entrance and at the cash desk.
  • Your entrance ticket ceases to be valid once you leave the paying part of the ZOO. Please let our reception staff know beforehand if you have a valid reason to leave the paying part and return later. If so, they will give you a stamp that will allow you to return to the paying part.
  • The management reserves the right to close the paying part of the ZOO or to partially limit access to this area for valid reasons, such as alteration works, situations threatening the safety of visitors or animals, etc. Such a measure shall not give rise to any full or partial refund of the entrance charge.
  • Parents and supervisors of children and/or groups remain responsible for those under their charge for the whole duration of the visit, even during guided walks with guides.
  • Children under 16 must be accompanied at all times. They will be denied access to the paying part if they are not accompanied.
  • Our reception staff have the right to deny access to:
    • Persons who are in possession of weapons, dangerous objects, alcohol, drugs, etc.;
    • Persons who in the past have already been found in possession of weapons, dangerous objects, alcohol, drugs etc. in one of our parks or in the vicinity thereof;
    • Persons whose behaviour arouses suspicion that they are engaged in drug trafficking;
    • Persons under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs;
    • Persons causing trouble;
    • Persons who have already caused trouble in the past;
    • Persons who refuse to submit to the present rules;
    • If such persons are already in the park, they will be removed without refund of their entrance ticket. The police will be called in if necessary.
  • Smoking is prohibited in the park. Smoking is only allowed in the designated smoking areas.

Security

  • Several CCTV cameras have been set up in the park for security reasons. The images will be used solely for the purposes provided for in the CCTV Act.
  • All instructions that are posted up in the park, such as “no entry”, route directions, warnings, age limits, maximum number of visitors, etc. must be observed at all times.
  • In order to ensure your safety and that of our animals, it is strictly prohibited to cross the physical boundaries (fences, moats, etc.). It is also strictly prohibited to put hands, fingers, sticks or other objects through bars or fences, or to throw objects into the animal enclosures.
  • It is evident that weapons or dangerous objects are not allowed into the park. The police will be called in if such items are discovered.
  • It is strictly prohibited to feed the animals in the park. Since they are given balanced diets, any other type of food could harm the animals’ health. It is also strictly prohibited to feed animals from outside Planckendael (pigeons, ducks, gulls, etc.).
  • It is prohibited to stroke the animals.
  • Pets are not allowed into the park, nor will the park provide accommodation for your pets during your visit. Do not leave your pets behind in your car in our car park; it may have harmful consequences for them.
  • Guide dogs and assistance dogs may enter the park in the company of their owners if they have an official accreditation (passport). Please let our reception staff know well in time and follow their instructions carefully. They may ask you not to enter certain buildings to avoid scaring our animals.
  • In order to make the park as safe as possible for every visitor, children’s bicycles, roller skates, inline skates, skateboards, scooters etc. are not allowed. However, pushchairs, wheelchairs and rollators are allowed. Motorized vehicles are in principle prohibited unless approved by the park management. The speed limit in our parks is 5 km/h.
  • To avoid annoyance to visitors and animals, radios and other sound equipment are not allowed.
  • Swimming or bathing in the ponds or pools is prohibited.

Clothing

  • You should wear appropriate clothing so as not to cause offence to other visitors.
  • To avoid frightening the animals, visitors must not enter the park in fancy dress (carnival clothing, animal suits, etc.). Only certain persons working in the park for KMDA are allowed to wear such clothing.
  • On 1 June 2011 (B.S. 13/07/2011), the Act prohibiting the wearing of clothing that completely or largely hides the face came into effect. If you fail to comply with these rules, you will be denied access to the park or be asked to leave the park without refund of the entrance charge.
  • Our toilet groups have facilities for changing babies’ nappies. Please use those facilities properly.

Catering

  • Smoking is not allowed in our catering outlets.
  • You are not allowed to eat or drink your own food or beverages in our restaurants or terrace cafés, except at the sites specially designated for school and youth groups. Naturally you are allowed to do so on the many benches scattered around the park. Always use the litter bins in the park to dispose of waste.
  • For food safety reasons, visitors are not allowed to bring their own food into areas where food is prepared.
  • Unauthorized persons are not allowed into our kitchens and storage areas.

Photos and films

  • You may make photos, films and sound recordings in the park for private use, without inconveniencing other visitors. You should keep in mind that not everyone wants to be photographed.
  • Making photos and video/audio recordings for professional and/or commercial purposes is subject to the written consent of the communication department of Planckendael Animal Park.

Sale, propaganda, etc.

  • It is prohibited to distribute or post up printed matter or to conduct opinion polls without the prior written consent of the park management.
  • It is prohibited to hold meetings and/or deliver speeches, engage in propaganda, collect funds, advertise, distribute, exchange or sell items in the parks without the prior written consent of the park management.

Damage

  • Where KMDA is liable for damage or harm to visitors, any compensation which it is required to pay shall on no account exceed the maximum amount of € 2,500.
  • KMDA shall on no account be held liable for damage or harm to visitors by third parties, even inside the park.
